Asphalt shingles are a great option for low and high-pitched roofs due to their affordability and the ability to withstand a variety of climate and weather conditions. However, to keep your roof in its current conditions, you need to avoid some common mistakes people tend to make.

Leaving Debris On the Roof

If you recently had a bad rainstorm or an especially windy day, there might be some debris on the roof. When you see debris like leaves, branches and twigs, head up to the roof and remove them. The weight from debris can eventually lead to damage of the shingles, and sharp twigs and branches can also cause destruction. This is even more common if some of your trees are overgrown and falling over the roof. Trim those trees to reduce debris after storms and overall.

Ignoring Your Gutters

Even though they're not directly related to the shingles themselves, you should also focus on overall cleanliness, which includes keeping those gutters clean. A common mistake is letting them become clogged, which can then weigh down the gutters and cause them to sag. Severe clogging keeps water from being able to drain off the roof properly, which can cause damage to the shingles over time, including rot and warping. Make sure you check the gutters on a regular basis and remove all of the debris until water can run clear through the gutters and down the downspouts.

Failing to Inspect the Roof

Your roof might have damage that you aren't aware of until a major leak occurs in your home. You can avoid interior and roofing damage by inspecting the shingles on a routine basis. Carefully take a ladder to the top of the roof, making sure it is tall enough to walk onto the roof, instead of having to climb or pull yourself up. If not, you need a taller ladder first. Walk around the roof and look closely at the shingles, flashing, and gutters to ensure everything is in good condition. Make note of any shingles that need to be replaced or any signs of damage to ask a roofing contractor about.

Making Repairs Yourself

In most cases, it is best that you hire a professional roofer to replace missing shingles or make other repairs. While some people can do this job well, it requires a certain amount of care and attention to detail to get it done right the first time.
